A sportsbook lobby is a long list, and a new bettor’s instinct is to start at the top. That is the wrong way to choose. The right question is not which sport is most exciting but which one you can bet on well: where you know enough to judge a price, where the markets are simple, and where the margin is lowest. Play971, the UAE’s licensed sportsbook, lists seven sports. Here they are ranked for a beginner, from the one to start with to the one to leave for later, with the reasoning for each.
The platform in a paragraph
Play971 launched publicly on 5 June 2026 under internet gaming and sports wagering licences from the General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority (GCGRA), operated by Coin Technology Projects LLC, an Abu Dhabi company in the Momentum group. Odds and data come from Sportradar. Users must be 21 or over, registered with an Emirates ID, a UAE mobile number and a residential address, and physically in Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah or Sharjah when they play; the platform does not work in Dubai. Location is checked on the device with Xpoint’s technology, VPNs are blocked, and accounts are in dirhams. Odds are decimal: 2.00 doubles your stake, and 1 divided by the price is the implied probability.
The ranking criteria
Three things decide the order. Knowledge: how likely a UAE resident is to already follow the sport, because the only edge a recreational bettor has is knowing the game. Simplicity: how easy the core markets are to understand and how few outcomes they have. Margin: how much the bookmaker keeps, which is lowest on two-outcome markets with deep liquidity and highest on multi-outcome markets with thin ones.
1. Football
First, and not close. Most residents already follow it, the fixture list runs from August to May, and the core markets are intuitive: match result, total goals over or under 2.5, both teams to score. The margin on major European matches is the lowest on the platform. And the UAE Pro League, listed alongside the Premier League, Champions League and the rest, is the one market where local knowledge of rotation, form and venues is worth more than the feed.
Start here: one bet on a match you will watch, placed after the line-ups are out, at a flat stake. Avoid accumulators and in-play until the single bet is a habit.
2. Tennis
Second because it is the simplest market in sport: two players, no draw, a match winner price on each. The two prices add up to a little over 100 per cent, so the margin is visible at a glance and usually small. Set and game handicaps add precision for a bettor who knows that a favourite will win but may drop a set. The calendar never stops, with the Australian Open in January, the Dubai and Abu Dhabi events in the new year, and a tournament somewhere every week.
Caution: form and surface matter enormously, and a player’s record on hard courts tells you little about clay. Bet on players you follow, not names you recognise.
3. Basketball
Third. The NBA has a strong following here and the markets are clean: moneyline, handicap and total. The handicap is the main market because favourites are often very short, and it is set to make either side roughly a coin flip, which keeps the margin low. The difficulty is practical rather than technical: tip-offs land in the early hours of the Gulf morning, and late injury news moves lines by several points. Bet on the few teams you follow, after the injury report, before bed.
4. Cricket
Fourth, and for a large share of UAE residents it could be first. Knowledge is high, the winter calendar is enormous, and the venues are local. It sits mid-table only because the markets are subtler: match-winner prices move sharply at the toss, top batter and top bowler have many outcomes and a wide margin, and totals depend on pitch and dew in ways that take a season to learn. A cricket fan who waits for the toss and sticks to match winner and totals will do fine. A newcomer to the sport should learn it from the stands first.
5. Horse racing
Fifth, with a caveat: racing has the deepest local roots of any sport on the platform, Meydan’s season opens in November and builds to the Dubai World Cup in March, and the operator has flagged expanded racing markets as an early priority. It ranks here because it is the hardest sport for a beginner to bet well. Fields are large, so the margin is wider; form is a specialist skill; and the win and each-way structure takes some learning. For someone who already follows racing it is a joy. For someone who does not, it is the sport most likely to produce a run of losing bets that feel like bad luck and are not.
6. Baseball
Sixth. A long season, a deep statistical culture and clean markets, but a thin following in the UAE and games played in the small hours. The moneyline and run line are easy enough; the knowledge is the problem. A bettor who does not know a team’s starting pitcher that night is betting blind, and that is most bettors here.
7. Ice hockey
Last, for the same reasons with less local following still. The puck line and total are simple, the overtime rules add a wrinkle, and almost nobody in the Gulf watches enough to have a view. Leave it alone unless you grew up with it.
How to use the ranking
Pick the highest-ranked sport you actually follow, not the highest-ranked sport on the list. A lifelong cricket fan should ignore the football entry and start at four; someone who has never watched the NBA should ignore three. The ranking is about where the edges are easiest to find, and an edge is knowledge you already have.
Then keep it narrow. One or two sports, a handful of competitions, a flat stake, a record of every bet. After a month the record will tell you whether the ranking was right for you.
The settings that apply to every sport
Before the first deposit, open the responsible gaming settings on Play971 and set a deposit limit at a figure you would be comfortable treating as the cost of a hobby; the platform is required to offer deposit limits, session reminders, time-outs and self-exclusion under its licence, and self-exclusion is enforceable through the Emirates ID. Philippa Bowland, the platform’s commercial director, framed the launch around letting fans “play sustainably”. The ranking above is how to bet well; the limit is how to keep betting at all.
Getting started
Register on play971.ae with your mobile number and email, verify with your Emirates ID, confirm your address and enable precise location with any VPN off. Set your limit, deposit in dirhams, and the sportsbook lobby lists all seven sports with the day’s fixtures.
Why rank sports on a licensed platform at all
Because on an offshore site the ranking would be academic: the best-judged bet in the world is worthless if the withdrawal never arrives. On Play971, identity is verified before deposit, the odds come from Sportradar, the limits are enforceable, and a federal regulator can act on a complaint. That is the platform on which the question “which sport should I bet on” is worth answering.
If you are 21 or over with an Emirates ID in a covered emirate, you can open a Play971 account, find your sport on the list, and start at the right place.
